How to be creative again
If you’re wondering how to be creative again, you’ve come to the right place! The most important word in that question is “again” because it highlights an essential truth: You were born creative. After all, you are a creation! That’s great news because it means creativity is not a skill you need to learn but rather a natural part of your being you need to rediscover.
Creativity is not only about being artistic. Artistry is one way to express creativity. Creativity is about seeking, noticing, and seizing opportunities to add value to your life and the lives of others. We appreciate creative people because they solve problems and invent ways to make life more pleasurable. They teach us to stretch our imagination and see possibilities. If you’re ready to learn how to be creative again and reinstate yourself in their ranks, keep reading.
This article has two sections. The first part presents three ways to prime yourself energetically so creativity can flow through you. The second part gives you three activities to begin putting your creative energy to use, especially when you need a little boost. Let’s get started!
How to Be Creative Again Part One
Clear your energetic blockages
There’s a reason why you use the word “blocked” to describe your struggle to create: Because you are blocked. Your creative flow is simply energy, and when you have an energetic blockage in your aura, your creativity may stagnate. To clear the blockage, use Energy Freedom Tapping (EFT), meditation, or visualization. Before visualizing, exhale three times. Then close your eyes and imagine colorful fireworks springing from your head. Make the sparks as bright and beautiful as you can imagine. Do this for no more than two minutes, three times a day: when you wake up, midday, and before you go to bed.
Ground Yourself
Grounding is a practice where you stand barefoot on the ground, connecting to the earth’s electrical charges. Connecting to the earth’s electricity helps balance your body’s electricity. The benefits of grounding include reducing inflammation, healing physical pain, and boosting your mood. There are several ways you can ground:
- Walk outdoors barefoot
- Lay or sit on the grass
- Use a grounding mat while indoors
When your body and spirit feel good, your creativity shines.
Play
It’s hard to be creative when you feel frustrated and anxious. Play eases stress. Find a fun activity you enjoy and dive in! Here are some ideas:
- Puzzles
- Musical instruments
- Dance
- Blowing bubbles
- Board games
- Video games
- Sports
- Water balloons
- Hide and go seek
Relax
If you feel overworked or exhausted, it’s essential to relax. Your creativity can’t flow when your energy is low! Indulge in a staycation. Relax in bed as you watch your favorite films. Have a spa day, or sunbathe outdoors. Allow your body to rejuvenate.
How to Be Creative Again Part Two
Random Popsicle Sticks
When you’re feeling uninspired or stuck, try pulling a random popsicle stick labeled with an activity to reinvigorate you. Keep them in a jar near your workspace, and add new ideas as they come to you. Try these activity ideas to get started:
- Call a friend
- Take three deep breaths and smile for 90 seconds
- Do ten jumping jacks
- Hold a power pose for 2 minutes
- Watch a film you’ve never seen
- Read a book you’ve never read
- Dance for 4 minutes
- Laugh
- Feng shui your space
- Sprint, walk, sprint
- Color in a coloring book
- Meditate
Paint Chips
As an English teacher, I’ve used paint chips to teach vocabulary. Each student desk would have a chip with the following content:
- Vocabulary word
- Definition
- Part of speech
- Synonym
The goal was to use your particular word in context during a class discussion. The paint chips made new vocabulary accessible and easy to learn.
You can do many creative projects with paint chips when you need some inspiration, including wall art, bookmarks, earrings, and coasters. Keep a stash handy and use them to create something new.
Spare Change
Here’s a fun way to put your spare change to use. Randomly grab a few coins, and add their values. Use the sum as the springboard for one of the following activities:
- Write a poem or flash fiction, using the sum as a theme or word limit.
- Do an activity, using the sum as your time limit.
- Pick a book and read the page number of the sum.
- Go outdoors and walk for the sum number of steps. Stop, look around, and notice something new.
