Are You True to Yourself?
Almost immediately after I earned my BA, I hit the pavement in search of a job–any job. I hadn’t figured out what I wanted to do with my music degree, but I knew I wanted to work.
I found an ad for a sales position in Los Angeles. During the interview, I was asked four questions, all of which I answered truthfully. I didn’t get hired.
A few weeks later, still in need of employment, I reapplied for the same job. I was asked the same four questions. Only this time, I answered untruthfully and was hired.
I ended up quitting the job because–surprise–it wasn’t a good fit. I hadn’t been true to myself during the interview, and I put myself in a frustrating and exhausting situation.
I learned my lesson: Be true to myself because if I’m not, I make my life unnecessarily harder.
Sometimes we may be tempted to compromise our values and integrity for the sake of a job or relationship, or approval. Typically, the result is a major crash and burn.
