What’s Your Why?
This prompt is inspired by my interview with @siraimezing.
As bloggers and entrepreneurs, we tend to focus on our “what.” When people ask about our blog or business, we’re quick to tell them what we do: I help people; I coach people; I write about cars; I design clothes.
That’s all good. But the more important question is, “What’s your why?” Why do we do what we do?
I just finished reading Simon Sinek’s book, “Start with Why,” in which he asserts that people don’t buy the “‘what.” Instead, he says, they buy the “why.”
Your “why” answers these questions:
- What is your cause?
- What do you believe in?
- What are your values?
- How are you changing a culture?
When your “why” is clear, you will attract people who share your values and believe in your cause. People love to support a cause they believe in.
Consider TOMS. This company has a clear “why” posted on its website: “TOMS has always stood for a better tomorrow–one where humanity thrives.”
And that’s just the beginning. TOMS has an entire page dedicated to its “why.” As a result, its customers are loyal and passionate about supporting its cause.
Today, write a journal response to this prompt: What is your “why?” Even if you’re not an entrepreneur or blogger, still consider why you do the work you do. Notice what ideas or insights come up.
