How to Clarify Your Blog’s Purpose

One of the most important things I’m learning about blogging is it is crucial to have a clear message. What do I want my audience to do, think, or feel after visiting my blog? Answering this question helps me fine-tune my intention and mission.

Honestly, I’m still figuring it out. But here’s how I answer as of now: I want people to feel inspired to write. I want writers who visit my blog to feel empowered and encouraged to be the best versions of themselves.

If I keep this in mind with every article I write and every podcast I produce, I’m good.

When I started my first blog ten years ago, I couldn’t answer that question. I didn’t know what I wanted to write about. I started the blog because my children’s book’s publisher told me that I needed a blog to build a platform.

So, I blogged about my book and publishing journey. But once I published it, then what was I to write about?

I followed the adage and wrote what I knew: music and literature and my life. But it all felt so random. Although I grew an audience, I still felt directionless and stuck because I knew my blog could be so much better. I remember telling my boyfriend, “I don’t know what to write about, and it’s so frustrating!”

Unfortunately, I did what many frustrated bloggers do: I ditched my blog. I couldn’t find the passion and the motivation to keep it going because I didn’t have a clear vision.

I’m determined not to repeat the past. This time, I will have a clear message and see where it leads me.

What do you want your audience to do, think, or feel after visiting your blog? Tell me in the comments!

  1. Yes, I think it’s so important for a blog to have a purpose! I’m still working on mine, as I’ve pivoted a bit from when I set out with my blog 6 months ago.

I think I’ve finally come to settle on my desired topics – healthy habits, mindset, and happiness. So the purpose of my blog is to inspire people to live their best lives, and to teach them the skills needed to develop all around wellness that lasts!

    1. That sounds on point and in alignment with all you’ve written thus far. Keep up the fantastic work, Clarissa!

  2. I love writing about a variety of things–like my honeymoon, or wedding planning during Covid, things that were happening in my life, but I know my purpose is to inspire others to shift their mindset, to live their best lives. Too many of us are living inauthentically because we think we have to, or are expected to and I want to help people live better.

    1. I love this! Beautiful response. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  3. Like you, I want my readers to feel inspired. Inspired to constantly pursue travel ambitions (even the little local adventures!) AND their career ambitions so that they’re leading a “growth lifestyle”. That said, it’s very early in my blogging journey – 4 months – and still getting a feel for what resonates best with folks!
I also want my readers to always feel entertained which I aim to do by writing in my own voice as much as possible.

    1. You have a wonderful voice, Simone. Your writing style is engaging; I noticed this straight away when I was reading your article on working remotely from Barbados. Keep up the outstanding work!

  4. I am new to blogging (if I do not consider any of those blogs I started in my teenage years as blogging), and I started out being confused about what I wanted to focus on! In the end, I settled with blogging about blogging since that is my current interest. There’s so much to learn, and I am just recording whatever I learn. To answer your question, I hope that my blog posts will help anyone else (bloggers, university students, etc) on this journey with me. Thanks for sharing, all the best! 🙂

    1. Hi, Ming!

I love this because a lot of bloggers start as investigators who want to learn the ins and outs of their niche. Then they teach what they learn. Keep up your wonderful site! Thanks for stopping by.

  5. I’ve been struggling with the straightforward way to explain what exactly my blog is about. However, I do know that I want people to feel like it’s okay to have feelings and share them freely. I’ve struggled with having someone to be there for me so that’s why I blog.

Great post, this helped me take a little pressure off of myself so that I can think.

    1. Hi, Khy!

This is great because you’ve identified a pain point that you can solve for your readers–feeling unseen and unheard. As you try new ideas, you’ll get clear on exactly how you can do that via your blog. Yay!
