What song represents you?
Inspired by my interview with music therapist and founder of Anderson Music Therapy, Noel Anderson.
I grew up in a small baptist church that expected all the children to participate in one of the many performances, presentations, or recitals every year.
At one particular recital, the director asked, “What song represents you?” Each participant had to choose a theme song that would play upon our stage entrance. I was stumped. I had no idea which song to choose.
The pianist, Sister Rosenburg, who knew me from age 1, said, “I know what fits you!” She inserted a CD and turned up the volume. My eyes lit up because it was neither a gospel song nor a hymn she chose.
Instead, she chose the rapturous Piano Concerto No.1 by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, one of my favorite composers. I beamed with joy as the horns bellowed, ushering the lustrous strings and thunderous piano.
That was many years ago. My theme song/piece changes over the years. As of now, it is Kelly Clarkson’s Breakaway. Tomorrow it may be Kris Kross’ Jump or Mary J Blige’s Just Fine.
Whatever it is, I’ll relax, listen, and beam with joy.
Write a journal entry about your theme song(s). What piece best represents you right now?
