Simple SEO

I know: Simple SEO sounds contradictory.

Sometimes just hearing the term SEO is enough to send shivers down your spine. All the little ins and outs and details that go into producing content that Google finds favorable can seem overwhelming.

At the same time, putting out content that nobody sees is discouraging. You want your blog posts and articles to rank and appear in search engines, driving traffic to your site.

So, what’s a blogger to do?

Blogging expert Janice Wald has been there, done that. When she first started blogging, she felt discouraged because she didn’t know how to get her content in front of people. How could she create content that would appear on the first few pages of a Google search?

After a lot of research, Janice figured it out. And now, she shares a wealth of tips and resources, simplifying the SEO process for bloggers. So before you write your next post or create your new blog, check out my eight takeaways from our conversation. Simple SEO: My 8 Takeaways from Janice Wald

  1. Pick a content niche. Your blog must have a focus. Otherwise, not only will your content confuse your readers; it will also confuse Google.
  2. Use a keyword tool like Mozbar to find keywords with a high monthly search volume and low competition for readership. Finding the right keyword will help you streamline your content. Generic topics like baking will not generate traffic to your blog. However, specific topics like baking with Braeburn apples catch Google’s eye.
  3. Come up with a four-word keyword phrase for your article. If your keyword is too short, search engines won’t notice it. Keeping your keyword to around four words increases its visibility.
  4. Put your keyword at the beginning of your headline, in your meta description, and your permalink. SEO tools like RankMath will help ensure your keyword is in all the right places.
  5. Link to internal and external links. Linking to your content and that of other experts boosts your credibility. When you include external links, Google views you as a trustworthy source who is genuinely trying to help your readers.
  6. Use more than one image and include the keyword in the ALT tag. Images not only catch your reader’s eye, but they also catch Google’s eye too. Although you don’t want too many images, including a few and typing your keyword in their ALT tags will increase your content’s visibility.
  7. Use a variety of media, including video in your posts. Consider these options: photos, drawings, infographics, GIFs, and whiteboard animations.  Lumen5 is a great resource to create videos for your posts easily.
  8. Repurpose your content for different platforms. Turn your blog post into an infographic to post on Facebook. Or turn it into a video to post on Youtube. Use your creativity to find multiple audiences you can reach on various platforms.
